Dr. Coriat also noticed that stuttering patients would sometimes gesture with their hands, something he found “peculiar.” From this he was able to discern that stutterers stuttered because they were desperate for attention and wanted to be fed, or even wiped. He also noted that when mumbling certain consonants, stutterers used the same muscles as babies sucking milk from their mothers’ breasts.

According to Coriat, stutterers “behaved” this way out of a childish need to gratify an out-of-control oral libido. And because most of Coriat’s male stutterers happened to have both an Oedipal complex and a mother fixation, they were latent homosexuals as well. Dr. Coriat’s female stutterers weren’t much better. According to him, because of their castration complex, they tried to turn their tongue into a penis so they could play with it. Disgusted with themselves, they then came to hate their mother, the original castrator.*
